I've just recently become interested in the history of the church and am looking for a good first read. Not much education about the church, but am fairly involved in it. Wondering if this is a good start, or do you suggest something else?

Not a good book to start with the Good Book the Bible is the best place to start.

I would recommend reading the 4 gospels, if not the whole new testament, first. Its a slow/complicated read, but very informative. You'll find yourself stopping a lot to do some research on the topics and references. Good luck!
