stephanie asked Allison Brennan:

I have a friend that picked up a few of your books without knowing it was a series. (of course she grabbed #7 and 8 I think) Are your books able to be read in any order or is it best to read in the actual order? I only ask because although it is a series some are sometimes okay as stand-alone novels as well. Input would be great - Thanks!

Allison Brennan Hi Stephanie --

Are you talking about the Lucy Kincaid series? Yes, they can be read alone, but because the book follow the same characters (Lucy and her boyfriend Sean) there is a sense of continuing growth and new conflicts over the course of the series. Each book has a contained mystery, though there are some minor continuing storylines.

Any of the first 6 books you can start, though I often will recommend starting with LOVE ME TO DEATH or SILENCED. (The first three books are before Lucy is in the FBI Academy, the second three books she's in training.) COLD SNAP is an outlier because it is about the Kincaid family coming home for Christmas told in three parts. You can start there, but recognize it's not really a Lucy book (her brother Patrick has the first story, for example, which is half the book.) But it is a completely stand alone story in the sense that it's about the family reconnecting after time.

DEAD HEAT is another great place to start because that's Lucy's first case after being assigned in San Antonio. You can start BEST LAID PLANS, but the mystery stems from what happened at the end of DEAD HEAT.

I hope that helps! Below is the order of the books (the digital novellas are printed in the print editions and also in the ebook editions, of other novels, as indicated.)

"Love is Murder" (novella) -- complete stand alone story
LOVE ME TO DEATH
KISS ME, KILL ME
IF I SHOULD DIE (includes Love is Murder)
SILENCED
STALKED
"Reckless"
STOLEN
COLD SNAP (includes Reckless)
DEAD HEAT
BEST LAID PLANS
NO GOOD DEED
