Jason Howell asked Daniel Barnett:

Daniel, I'm asking this of several writers, some friends, some strangers... Follower counts, blog traffic, Amazon rankings: vanity metrics. Numbers that have cosmetic value, but aren't necessarily meaningful in and of themselves. Have you ever found yourself chasing these numbers just to run up the score? Or does comparing yourself with peers who appear to be "winning" ever become a problem? How do you deal? Thanks.

Daniel Barnett Hi Jason,

I (regretfully) don't have any real media presence at this time, so when it comes to follower counts and blog traffic, I don't have anything to keep an eye on. I do glance at Amazon rankings for individual titles, though, mostly to have a better idea of which publishing houses seem to sell books better, and at what prices. Winning or losing doesn't factor into it so much . . . it's just information gathering, mostly.

Thanks for reaching out!
