A Goodreads user asked:

Anyone think the end was a cheat, considering the first person POV? Not that I didn't guess, but wouldn't we have known? Did this sort of "deception" occur in other places in the book?

Javin Goyal I totally think it was a cheat. The whole point of a POV is that we get to know what is going on in the character's mind. From Darrow's POV, it's quite clear that he was devastated at Sevro's "death". I had initially thought that maybe Mustang, Sevro and Cassius planned it all without telling Darrow so that it looks genuine but that wasn't the case. The author could have used ambiguous language or used his words carefully in the POV but he just went ahead and blatantly cheated. This is the only occasion I recall where such a thing has happened.. do any other instances from other novels come to mind?

Nicki YES! I feel the same way. There were other times in the series when Darrow knew more than the narration let on and the reader was surprised along with the other characters in the book. But, if you look back, you realize that you were just jumping to conclusions and that the narration never came out and confirmed what you thought. But for this particular ending, Darrow's narration allowed nothing except that what was happening was real.

Christina Robinson Yeah, that crossed my mind too. How can Darrow sit and think "this is the end" but know the plan the whole time. Honestly, I guessed it too, it was kinda obvious. Yes, a definite cheat. Oh well, I still enjoyed it.
