Ruth asked Anita Diamant:

Was there any historic foundation for the character in 'The Red Tent' who was surrounded by companions all called or known as Deborah? She was an oracle figure. I'm sorry - a long time since I read it. I found this idea striking and wondered whether it was historical or your own idea - if so, was it based in feminism. I thnk it was a pretty feminist book in many ways.

Anita Diamant The "Deborahs"were my invention, based very loosely on traditions of the ancient near east.
The Red Tent is a feminist book in that it takes women's lives seriously and treats their work (childrearing, spinning and fabrication clothing, etc, midwifery) as worthy and important.
