Curtis Sittenfeld What a nice thing to say! I aspire to be amazingly decent, but I definitely don't always succeed. I actually think many of my characters are even more flawed than I am, however, because I personally don't find people who aren't flawed to be very interesting. It turns out not all readers agree--some readers clearly look for characters to be moral paragons--but luckily, there are plenty of kinds of books for plenty of kinds of readers.

Did you lose friends over "Prep"? Did you make any? A decade after reading the book, it still strikes me as a deeply descriptive work of fiction and the major characters are easy to summon. The thing with writing something so very memorable, of course, is that it can stir all kinds of feelings in someone from the same time or place.
