Ha! I once went on a date to an extremely brightly-lit restaurant, so brightly-lit that I knew from the moment we entered nothing good could come of it. And I was right. The poor person on the date with me was a nice guy, however.

Did you lose friends over "Prep"? Did you make any? A decade after reading the book, it still strikes me as a deeply descriptive work of fiction and the major characters are easy to summon. The thing with writing something so very memorable, of course, is that it can stir all kinds of feelings in someone from the same time or place.

I am a HUGE fan of your writing! My question: the protagonist in each of your novels struggles with powerlessness in one or more heterosexual relationships, and each also has a more confident and/ or unconventional foil who has a lesbian relationship and seems to avoid these struggles. Do you think power imbalances are less acute in same-sex relationships than in heterosexual ones?
