Mary asked Katarina Bivald:

How did you decide to set the book in Iowa?

Katarina Bivald Patricia Highsmith once wrote about plotting: "A plot should not even be completed. I have to think of my own entertainment, and I like surprises myself."

I like to think that the same is true of setting. One of the best thing about reading is how it allows you to travel in your mind, and I like to think writing should be the same. Why write about something you know or the place where you already are?

So I chose Iowa precisely because I didn't know anything about it, except that it once had a library cat named Dewey Readmore Books. And after all, how much more do you need to know to love a place?
