A Goodreads user asked Manny Rayner:

If something can be represented with numbers or symbols, does that also mean that they ARE numbers or symbols?

Manny Rayner I've seen several people try to answer that question. Paraphrasing slightly, Max Tegmark in Our Mathematical Universe says of course they are, it's bleeding obvious, but Roland Omnès in Philosophie de la science contemporaine says you gotta be kidding, are you some kind of retard? I'm guessing their friends try to keep them at opposite ends of the bar when they attend the same conference.
