Jessie asked Nalini Singh:

In the Psy/Changeling series I've noticed that there are dominant maternal women who don't fight, but are there dominant paternal men who don't fight?

Nalini Singh Yes, there are dominant paternal males. I need to mention them more often - I think I've only done that specifically in one book.

But it's submissives that don't fight (and even in that case, they will fight if they are the last line of defense for the pack's most vulnerable - you get a real insight into how a submissive thinks and behaves in such circumstances in both Allegiance of Honor and in the Felix/Dezi novella in Wild Embrace).

While submissives are simply not built for aggression, maternals/paternals have it in them. They can and will fight if necessary, especially the more dominant ones. Adria is actually an example of someone who tipped over the line in dominance and went into soldier territory. With the maternals/paternals, while an active security role is not their driving force, they are fully capable of it. It's just that, unlike the soldier dominants, they're more drawn to running the family aspects of a pack.

But they train and stay fit and when an enemy attacks the pack, they will be right there just behind the soldier dominants.
