I read the first few pages of this book in the store and I know I will never read it. My question is why was the girl being raped in front of the courtroom with all those people watching and doing nothing?

Inga If you read a little further than the first few pages, you will understand that it is not the "poor girl" being raped in from of the courtroom, it is ALL of US being raped daily by consumerism and market society. And ALL of US are doing nothing as this happens.

Writing about a crime and illustrating an exploration of it doesn't necessarily condone it.
