Vikki Holding asked Scott Hawkins:

Hey! This was more just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed The Library at Mount Char and how it was one of the most unique novels I've ever read! Who was your favourite character to write? I loved Carolyn, but I think overall I loved how you wrote David the most.

Scott Hawkins Hey Vikki,

Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it.

Hmm, tough question. I absolutely loved writing the big fight scene between David and Carolyn. Writing that scene was probably the most fun I've ever had, period. It was just soooooo satisfying to have her finally get the upper hand and smite the @^%# out of that guy. But I think that might be more the exception that proved the rule.

There's a certain element of, I guess, method acting to writing these guys. It takes me a little bit to get into their heads. And once I do, I kind of mentally keep up the illusion. I don't walk around the house speaking in tongues, or anything like that, but I've noticed when I was writing David I kind of mentally nudge myself to be crankier than I normally am, and with Carolyn I sort of lean more towards a cold and distant response, and so on.

For that reason, Erwin was probably the most fun to write. Any scene with him pretty much wrote itself. Just put Erwin in a room with somebody who annoys him and he does all the work. Plus he's just a fun guy, I think.
