Is the book exactly like the TV show? Just wondering if it's worth reading.

Catherine It's nothing like the TV show. The only thing that's the same is that a woman from a privileged background goes west to teach and falls in love with a Mountie. The show has a lot of extra characters and a completely different plot.
Chloe Jane It is not the TV show at all. But if you have seen the When Calls the Heart Movie, it will explain a lot of how the book and TV show are related.
sarah No, not at all. I've been a fan of the books for 20 years now, and since they started the show I've been watching religiously. However, both are completely different. You just can't expect plots to follow along with each other; more of loosely-based ideas. As mentioned by another commenter, she is writing a follow up series along with her daughter that closely resemble the TV series. Those books portray the niece of original When Calls The Heart character Elizabeth.
Karen Lewis it isn't because there are diff characters and setting + problems

Sherri No, the book shows a more realistic point of view, it is a different plot story
ZoeKate No it's not, it's still worth reading, though.
Theresa It's so much better than the TV show!!
Greta The TV show and the books are completely different besides the main character, Elizabeth and her background, and her falling in love with a Mountie. Both are very good, although in my opinion I like the books much better than the TV show.
Danielle Flynn The TV show is actually based off of the Return to the Canadian West series (which follows this Elizabeth's niece, Elizabeth) ...the first book in the series is called Where Courage Calls. That said, aside from some of the character names being the same and the name of the town in which it's set, the TV show and book are nothing alike, not even having the same major plotline. This book, When Calls the Heart is better than Where Courage Calls, in my opinion. I do enjoy the TV show too.
Rick Kohler The Elizabeth in the TV show is supposed to be the niece of the Elizabeth in the book, even though both are set in the 1910s. The TV movie that came out in 2013 a few months before the tv series started was closer to the book. The Elizabeth Thatcher character played by Maggie Grace in the original TV movie was also supposed to be the aunt of the TV series Elizabeth Thatcher.
Stacey Lattier There's a new series she just put out called "Return to the Canadian West" that goes along with the TV series. The first two books are out, and the third is due to come out this summer.
Janice S. It is not exactly like the TV show. I don't think any TV show can really match the book. It is definitely worth the read.
