asked:
What? Wha-Why? What is SO sad about this story? what is it that makes it such a masterpiece? Cause I see people saying that this story made them cry waterfalls, and the story sounds like a normal/if not stupid fan-fic. Should I check it out? I mean, I don't really ship Destiel, but I don't mind it....I simply don't know what to do.

It starts as a normal fan fiction but it is the second half that makes you cry (especially the last 2 chapters and the epilogue). It's beautifully written and although it starts like the usual Destiel slash fiction, towards the end it feels like a book and not like a fan fic at all.
The story is AU (alternative universe) meaning that it has very little (almost nothing ) in common with the show. You don't have to have seen the show or to ship Destiel. You can replace the names of the characters with other random names and it won't change anything.
So, yeah. You should check it out. And remember that to more you near the end the better it gets. I promise.
Good luck.

it's been a few months, and i pray that you've read Twist and Shout already. Please, please, please do so if you haven't. I literally made a goodreads account to leave this comment. This isn't a fanfic. It's art. It's a novel that deserves to go down in history.

I can't speak for everyone, but I cried because the book grounds itself in the real history of queerness in America. I felt grief and pain for all the real people this fictional story represents. I did a lot of research and writing on the history of LGBTQ+ people for papers and personal research in college. Culturally speaking, these were my people, you know? My ancestors. And so many of them died way too young and lived such difficult lives. Being gay in America in the 60s-90s SUCKED. Life was hard and unfair and full of cruelty. This book doesn't sugarcoat it.
Also, Vietnam. The war is a major player in this book which is also not sugarcoated.

I know this question is two years old, but: it sounds like a stupid fanfiction because it is. It's so far from a masterpiece... it's not even an adequate story (I do ship Destiel, by the way).

In case you haven't...
Not only I don't ship Destiel but I haven't seen a single supernatural episode in my life. Though I saw some cute destiel gifs on tumblr, got curious and decided to read the most popular fiction on AO3 just for fun. Boy was I wrong about the fun expectation. By the end you will have cried rivers, you will have forgotten its fan fiction and not a well crafted book, you won't regret it.
Why is it such a masterpiece? Beautiful, poignant writing. Well paced, it builds a very romantic atmosphere before crushing you with hopelessness, and at the same time, the feeling that even if life may not always go the way it's supposed to, maybe that shouldn't crush your soul at all. To me, the message is that we should allow ourselves to grow, to move on.

girl girl girl oh hon okay so you should check it out. It was amazingly written and had a great plot. The first half is pretty normal, nothing to freak out about (that much). Then the second half. Oh the second half. I was torn apart. Although it is beautifully written, I wanted to take my computer and throw it at a wall. I'm guessing by now you've read it but if not it will make you feel that way. although I was sad by the end of the epilogue, I have to admit, it was a great story. It was almost like a book. I hope you've read it by now. (:
