How do you keep the ideas and characters fresh and interesting while writing a series?

Darlene, what a great question! Thanks for asking.
When I first sketched out the skelton of the series I didn't know all the specific events that would drive the plot forward. And I was still getting to know the characters. Now that we've (my characters and I) have been together for nearly 4 years, we've gotten to know each other.
They've shown me what their likes and dislikes are and what makes them tick. As their creator, I know what general trials they need to yet endure to grow and mature. From knowing them in such an intimate way then, as I read the work of other authors ideas spark. As well, as I'm writing, I Google topics like mythological creatures and do deep dives there. These influences all comingle and merge to create my writing.

First, Hi to a fellow Texan? I agree with your description of "writer's block." When I hit something that won't 'write,' I put a note to place hold with what frustrates me. Easy to find when my subconscious pulls all the threads together for the scene. Working on anything else also helps.
