As I was writing fanfic possibly before the term was invented (and so were a lot of other people), any other answer would be quite hypocritical.
I once wrote up a little essay on the topic, good grief, ten years back now; a bit out of date but in parts still pertinent.

This essay was written just a few years pre-Kindle and the e-books marketing revolution, which is a whole 'nother conversation and then some. (The link at the end of the essay to the old City Pages interview is long dead.)

Vorkosigan saga is brilliant. I'm pleasantly surprised how much I loved Vorpatril's alliance which led me to conclusion that you managed to achieve a specific mood where more than one character can be a main protagonist without changing "feeling" of the story which I believe is quite difficult :). Are you considering continuing quest star stories?

How did Barryar not have a population crisis after the time of isolation with scads more women escaping to freedom in other places? It seems like you wouldn't have to be a mercenary to get away, there'd be a thriving human trafficking operation going on like in the former Soviet block countries where women would rather be prostitutes or mail order brides to men in less heinous countries than to stay where they are.
