Gamache reads people very well and he could tell through her behavior that she was not a team player. He only wants team players working with him and people willing to admit they are wrong. Based on her not being able to see that SHE may be the problem (when looking at her reflection in the mirror and then the window), it was obvious that she is self-centered and not willing to she herself as ever being wrong.

Terrie
She mean, snotty, childish, narcisistic -- nothing is EVER her fault. Creepy.

She starts out very likable. But her character is slowly revealed to be not just inexperienced and naive and bumbling, but very flawed.
Nicholas
The real question to me, in this first novel is why he put up with her poor behavior for so long.
Susan Kinnevy
She's annoying and seems too stupid to be on that police force. I am so tired of this characterization of females in detective fiction. I'm going to reread Carol O'Connell's Mallory series -- I love her

What did Yvette Nichol do wrong? She stumbled into this book is what she did wrong.
Abhirup
Nichol has great potential - but like many other characters in the book (and this seems to be a consistent theme) - sees the world in binary - right or wrong, good or bad, and everything is about herself.
That is what "Still Life" means - many characters act childish and blame other people for their problems - Nichol, Yolande & at least 2 more people revealed which are spoilers - instead of taking responsibility for their own lives and being active.

you should read those scences again. then read the other bookin the seriesls to fully get why nichol rubs people the wrong way. and gamache doesn't dislike her. he dislikes how she treats others and doesn't do the 4 things listed in a previous question.

Hi! I googled the same thing ....
Isn't she autistic?
Isn't she autistic?
Melody Smith
To me, you don't really get Nicol in her intro. She is ambitious and wants to be a success but like many cops her personality holds her back. Sometimes I thought she was a little on r he autism spectrum in her rigidity. This book was written before we understood what we do now. She appears in a later book, and Gemache has to trust her. She doesn't change much, but he understands and uses her skills while correcting her social weaknesses.
Deb
Having read the series (except for Devils Are All Here) twice, I think looking back that Gamache is impatient with Yvette because she does not respect even herself. He is disappointed.
Debra Stockton
Only one way to answer this question: READ ON! All the Gamache books reveal a long arc of the plot... over time.
George
As I remember, he eventually places her in jobs where her personality and character don't get in the way.
Rita Appio
She does not understand human complexity and she feels that she, and her wishes, are the centers of the universe.
Artemisia
She is not a team player that is true, she's too headstrong, and there's something else I can't quite put my finger on, needs a little more finesse or something when dealing with others? - but I've only read one book so far. She's a very green rookie is all I can say.
However, Jean Guy and Chief Inspector Gamache have the kind of relationship from years of working together, and that is going to be a little tough to break in to. Jean Guy also seemed to be a little leery of her.
I love the character of Jean Guy Beauvoir so far. Yvette does seem only concerned with herself, how she appears to her boss, and advancement.
