The Robert Wise version (1963) is outstanding. Julie Harris is perfect in the role of Eleanor. I remember being terrified after seeing it for the first time many years ago. The 1999 remake is absolutely dreadful.

The 1963 black and white film version is one of the all-time scariest movies devoid of gore, monsters or an obvious menace. Because, it's the house. It's a psychological thriller in the truest, classic sense of that phrase.

Actually, as far as I know, there are two films based on this book, kind of! They are both called "The Haunting." The 1963 version stars Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn. As far as I remember it is both very atmospheric and pretty faithful to the book. The 1999 version stars Lili Taylor, Catherine-Zeta Jones, Liam Neeson and Owen Wilson. I haven't seen that one but I believe it is a kind of remake of the '63 film, but that they have changed some rather large elements of the book.

I would recommend The House On Haunted Hill, starring Vincent Price. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZEM1...

Yes, Robert Wise's "The Haunting" (1963). Very high up there in the list of famous horror films.

Has anyone here watched the new Netflix version? I ask because I did watch the 1999 movie version and it was 'okay'.
Followup question...I have never read it, should I read it before watching the show? I have it reserved at the library but haven't decided if I should just watch the show and be genuinely 'in the dark' so to speak...haha

The Netflix version of The Haunting of Hill House is very loosely based in the book. They took nuances from the book but the series is quite different. Both are very good.

Netflix is making it into a movie, it comes out 10/12, and I just picked up my copy from the library - can't wait to read it!

I own the 1999 movie on dvd and it is pretty creepy! I love watching it every October! This movie stays true to form of the book.

The Julie Harris version is my fav spooky movie. Best line: "Hill House should torn down and the ground sown with salt."
The remake with Catherine Zeta Jones has very good CGI special effects, but the ending monologue destroyed this movie remake for me.
