I'm watching the Netflix series now and I'm hooked! I have 2 episodes left. It's pretty great so far. I definitely recommend it. There are some nods to the book and some familiar names, but the story is not the same. You don't need to have read the book to enjoy the series.
I loved the 1963 movie and disliked all other renditions, but I loved the Netflix series! Great nods to the original movie plus a really great plot, fantastic acting, and some perfect scares. I highly recommend.
The 1963 movie was excellent, well done. The 1999 did not convey any of the truly psychological horror and suspense. It had campy special effects and just didn't work for me at all. I hope you have read the book--it's great.
Please DO watch the 1963 movie with Julie Harris. Spookiest movie ever. The 1999 movie has lots of fancy CGI, but doesn't convey the horror as well.
