Given that Fowles wrote the screenplay for the movie, in which a mysterious man knocks on her door in Greece after she had her fling and falling out with Nicholas in Greece, I'd hazard (quasi-pun intended) a guess that it was after the Greece visit that she got involved.

I started asking myself this question too once I had finished the book. Conchis and co. are definitely powerful enough to accomplish this. It could even be theorized that he was being set up as their test subject right from the beginning. It seems to me though that if Alison's place in Nicholas's life is completely a construct of the masque, the ending is less significant. I mean she would be like Lily then wouldn't she?
