Grace Anthony
Grace Anthony asked Jessica Day George:

Hi, I'm an indie author and I have published one short story an am working on a fairy tale adaptation that's going to be a novel. I was wondering if you could give me any advice on how to start approaching publishing houses?

Jessica Day George It depends on the publisher you want to approach. Look for a publisher that publishes your type of book, and check their website. There are generally submission guidelines on there.

But many of them do not take manuscripts from authors, they only work through an agent. You might want to try and get an agent first. Look for an agent (there are online resources, if you just google literary agents) who represents the type of book you're writing. Some agents will not represent YA books, or adult books, some won't touch fantasy or sci fi, etc.

You could also go to writers' conferences that include pitch sessions, where you can pitch your book to an agent or editor. That is how I got both my agent and my first publishing contract.

Good luck!
