Hmmm! There are a million ways to answer the first question, but the easiest way is this: I think there are all sorts of ways people can feel isolated, and these boys represent two of those. Ollie's an extrovert trapped in the woods; Moritz is an introvert stuck in public. They are both nothing and everything alike, and that sort of dynamic is very compelling to me!
And man oh man, I hear you about the sequel. But you know, for a while I thought it might never get to come out at all, and we're still revising it! So early 2017? I'll take it! :D
