Emily asked Jessica Day George:

Hello Miss George! It’s so cool that I get to ask you a question! My question is, are there any ways I can become a better writer? I don’t think I’m at all good at it, but I really want to be an author like you! Your books are amazing! I just love them!

Jessica Day George First of all, thanks so much! I'm so happy that you love my books!

I have three tips I give to aspiring writers:

1. Read. You have a read all the time, and read widely, not just the type of book you want to write! Read poetry, history, mysteries, fantasy, everything! That helps you see what works and what doesn't, and develop your own voice!

2. Write! You have to write every day to keep those writing muscles big and juicy! Even if you just write a letter to a friend, or write a journal, or a list of titles for your story, write, write, write!

3. Keep your writing! If you write a story and then think, this is stupid! Or you write a first chapter and don't know what to do next, that's okay! Keep it. Later you might figure out how to make it better, or how to continue it. Or you might just want to look back and see how much you've grown!
