Must I read the first book to enjoy the second book? I would like to read in order but my library only has the second book and the first book has been out on loan (for probably a long time because of holds).

You would miss a few subtleties and references, and you wouldn't understand the significance of the opening scene, but you'd enjoy it. The first is mostly about solving the mystery that sets the stage for the second book. Make sure you read a synopsis with spoilers or you'll be totally lost.(less)
