Olivia Newton
asked:
Must I read the first book to enjoy the second book? I would like to read in order but my library only has the second book and the first book has been out on loan (for probably a long time because of holds).

If you read a good synopsis of the first, I think you could jump into the second. You would miss a few subtleties and references, and you wouldn't understand the significance of the opening scene, but you'd enjoy it. The first is mostly about solving the mystery that sets the stage for the second book. Make sure you read a synopsis with spoilers or you'll be totally lost.
Bruce
The first book wasn't as good, but it lays the premise for the second book. I think you could start off on this book but it would be a 'WTF is happening' experience. ;)

I think there are a lot of plot points, and particularly a lot of character motivation, that would be a little hard to wrap your head around if you jumped straight into the dark forest.
Bart
Not necessarily, but it would spoil your enjoyment of the first book, so if you want to read both, do so in order.
