Lynn Roberts The only thing in the world Ray loves is his dog - and he's about to lose him to the warden. So they flee and travel, only he runs out of money/car trouble, etc. He realizes he can't go on, nor can he live without his dog so he explains to the dog how dog must be free, etc. Last page, Ray sees his life as a movie, rolling, etc. (they say when we die, our life flashes before us). He sees his home, feeding One Eye, good dog, as he rolls the car into the ocean. See Prologue where it's morning and dog is looking at ocean as if expecting something to arise. Gorse grass is broken and smashed. Sailors are searching a great disturbance (which dog doesn't see or he'd probably still wait there). Ray sets the dog free to life and to roam, and Ray drives his car, at high tide, into the ocean. He knows the warden will only come after the dog; the bones (which he sank earlier) will float back and be identified and they probably come after him too. He has nothing left to go home to, nor does the dog "belong" to him to take along. So he sets them both free - one to life and one to death.

Jane Anderson That's not my understanding at all and I do hope that's not the case. The saddest fictional (I hope he's fictional) character ever. Hope the author has no personal experience of that degree of loneliness
Bindy Came to the reviews to figure this out myself! Thanks for asking the question!
