Oh, man. At some level, they all do, because you don't devote a couple years of your life to something that is not fulfilling.
But CHAINS and FORGE (working on ASHES now) - my historical trilogy about Northern slaves in the American Revolution - is deeply gratifying because I love my country. I hate how we have allowed the horrifying holocaust of slavery to continue to poison our people. We Americans (particularly white Americans) must own up to our history if we are ever going to fulfill the promise of the Declaration of Independence. I hope my books can play a role in helping to explain that history.
On the contemporary YA side, I have to say THE IMPOSSIBLE KNIFE OF MEMORY, WINTERGIRLS, and SPEAK, for personal reasons and because I know they have touched so many readers.

Laurie Halse Anderson:
I'm from Baldwinsville. I'm here in need of a voice louder than my own, and I don't know where to turn. I am Samantha Woollacott, and an active duty marine. I am being medically retired due to what's known as, Rape Related PTSD. I need a voice to speak for every victim who doesn't have one of their own. This is a side of the military that they don't see. Can you help?

Laurie Halse Anderson:
Dear Laurie, (love wintergirls!) Hello. I'm about to graduate from college and I'm 21. It took me a lot longer to get my associates because I had to take remedial classes, switched my curriculum etc. I wanted to transfer to receive my BA but I might have to take a year off because of financial reasons. I'm worried that by the time I get my BA I will be too old. I keep thinking negatively about my future. Any advice?
