I personally don't believe lexile level should determine at what age a reader should consume some work of literature. I read the preceding 4 books at age 15, and I think I got more out of it than a younger reader would have, given that the characters were around my age and there is some heavy psychological stuff going on that might not register with younger readers. I'd recommend this series to readers 12 and older.
Also, it is mostly appropriate for young readers. There is no profanity or sex, but there is a large amount of violence and gore, especially in The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, and The Kill Order.

I honestly think that it depends on your lexile level. It's not inappropriate and doesn't cuss at all as far as I know. The movies have a lot smaller age group than the books.
