Jenel Cope asked Juliet Marillier:

One of the things I love about your work is your ability to combine genres - fantasy, historical fiction, romance, and now even mystery - into a single book. Was this something you set out to do deliberately, especially with Blackthorn & Grim,or did it come organically through developing the story?

Juliet Marillier What a great question, Jenel! Mostly it's an organic thing that just happens when I write - certainly that's the case with the blend of history, fantasy and romance. I don't think about genres much when writing, I just tell that particular story in what feels like the most appropriate way. But I did make a deliberate decision to include the mystery element in the Blackthorn & Grim series, partly because I love reading mystery series that feature the same puzzle-solving protagonists (eg Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher series and Robert Galbraith's Cormoran Strike mysteries) and wanted to attempt something similar while keeping the uncanny element.
