Nenia Campbell:
...I need recs from those genres. Pretty please point me in the direction of good sci-fi and fantasy?

OH BOY!!! I think this is one of my favorite questions I've been asked so far. >:D
So good sci-fi. Well, one of my favorite authors of all time is Sheri S. Tepper. She writes feminist themed science-fiction novels that are quite good. I recommend Grass if you like space opera, Gate to Women's Country if you like dystopians, and Beauty if you like science-fiction-fantasy. Margaret Atwood's MadAddam trilogy is excellent (book one is Oryx and Crake). I'd also recommend Pat Frank's Alas, Babylon to anyone who likes The Walking Dead, as it has many similar themes, minus the zombies. Also, check out Joan D. Vinge's The Snow Queen and S.L. Viehl's Stardoc. BEST. SPACE OPERA. EVER.
Fantasy is a bit more difficult. Obviously, The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle is one of my favorites, and Sharon Shinn's Shape Changer's Wife. If you haven't read it already, I'd also recommend Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. Diana Wynne Jones is a must-read, and I'd suggest starting with Fire & Hemlock. Anything Brandon Sanderson writes is good, and so is Tanith Lee (Electric Forest and White as Snow are awesome), Mercedes Lackey's Five Hundred Kingdoms series (first two) and Elemental Masters series (all of them), and, of course, the queen of gritty darkness herself, R. Lee Smith.
If you like any of these authors, let me know, and I can fine-tune my recommendations to be more specific. It's a whole new and alien world out there, and I love exploring it!
