A Goodreads user asked E. Lockhart:

Is the stream-of-conscious style used in Liars something that comes naturally to you, or was it something you had to consciously work hard on? Stream-of-conscious can be a polarising style, but what's your opinion?

E. Lockhart Interesting question! I think stream-of-consciousness generally refers to a style where there's a lot of verbiage and tangents -- so you as a reader are following the train of someone's thought. In We Were Liars, I was not doing that, but rather trying to show the inside of someone's mind through careful repetition and occasional use of free verse - so there are few tangents and minimal verbiage. I hope that makes sense. The style is hard work.
