Is the stream-of-conscious style used in Liars something that comes naturally to you, or was it something you had to consciously work hard on? Stream-of-conscious can be a polarising style, but what's your opinion?

Interesting question! I think stream-of-consciousness generally refers to a style where there's a lot of verbiage and tangents -- so you as a reader are following the train of someone's thought. In We Were Liars, I was not doing that, but rather trying to show the inside of someone's mind through careful repetition and occasional use of free verse - so there are few tangents and minimal verbiage. I hope that makes sense. The style is hard work.

I really liked the Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks - but the ending made me so sad. Frankie is clearly brilliant and amazing, but never develops her own group of pals who understand and support her for who she fully is (although she does have a very sweet roommate). Will Frankie ever get a sequel (/close friends)?

So...We Were Liars was a great read. I really like the fact that it leaves you feeling all these emotions and leaves you utterly breathless. I read the ruby Oliver novels years ago and I have to say that Liars is pretty different from it. What made you decide to shift perspectives and write a novel that's not "light"? And how was the writing process like?
