Tori De asked:

At first glance this book turns me off (mostly the dragons--the covers do not give them justice, making them look cheap and marketed instead of the true majesty they are supposed to be). Is the plot much more than what meets the eye? Or do we have rude, rebellious characters and prophecy plot devices akin to what is common in fantasy books these days? Are the characters dragon-like (unique enough)?

BittersweetDreams That's funny. I think the covers look wonderful and vibrant. They may not be realistic enough but they give enough insight as to what's inside the book. But that's just my opinion, anyway.

Besides that, the characters are quite diverse and likable. The Dragonets of Destiny, the protagonists of the first series, act rude and rebellious to their "caretakers", the Talons of Peace, who, contrary to their name, quite dislike the dragonets of destiny and at one point end up chaining Tsunami the SeaWing and make plans to kill Glory the RainWing as the original prophecy didn't call for a RainWing.

But it's only Glory and Tsunami who act rude and rebellious to the Talons. Sunny the SandWing, Clay the MudWing (the protagonist of The Dragonet Prophecy), and Starflight the NightWing don't really appreciate the fact that they were raised under a mountain by the Talons for the first six years of their life (an equivalent to about seventeen years in human years since dragons age faster), but they don't openly complain about the Talons. Sunny and Clay are the optimists of the group and are trying to keep the peace, so they don't complain and try to see the bright side of things, while Starflight is the stereotypical "nerdy coward" who is too afraid to put any input to anything.

The prophecy isn't a "plot device" per say. The first series does revolve around it, but it's not the only thing used to drive the plot forward. I'd add more to my argument but then I'd be spoiling the books.

I personally think the Wings of Fire series is very well worth reading, and is even better than the Warriors series. The plot is diverse and really makes it feel as if you are right with the characters, watching everything happen. But if you don't like it that's okay, as everyone has opinions. Read the prologue first. If you don't like it so far, then you probably won't like the rest of the book, but if you find some interest, then continue reading. :)
Denae Christine I put these books down for years because the covers made the dragons look like crocodiles with wings. I'm so glad I finally read them! The story isn't complicated, but it has depth and plot twists. The characters are all unique (you'd think keeping a dozen dragons straight would be hard, but it's not) with their own personalities. Each culture is different, too, and the story plays upon each character's strengths.
Lunesage Don't judge a book by it's cover. this is the best series i have ever read.
Mariya Carver I totally loved this book and I've also read all 8 of the ones in the series. The plot, like most plots, has a very basic skeleton, but around it there are so many complications that make it intriguing. The dragons are awesome, and Ms. Sutherland was great with classifying each dragon tribe.
Olivia Holtgren Yes, the characters are awesome!!! I don't think it's physically possible for anyone to not like this book!
Laura Chandler It certainly is not the best dragon book I've ever read, but I found it to be very entertaining and worth the read. The characters are all different and fun to read, if a little predictable and typical at times, but in all think they were good enough to move the plot along. Most of the appeal for me was in the worldbuilding and action.

I won't spoil the whole series, but I will say that there is a fairly big plot twist in later books that completely changed my opinion of the earlier ones and gave me a MUCH improved view of the series.

If the first book is interesting to you, like it was for me, I highly recommend giving the rest of them a chance because they get better as they go on. In my opinion, the story really picks up and gets a lot more interesting in books 3 - 5. However, if you aren't able to make it through the first and second books, it may not be worth it.
Zoubek I was recommended this series by friend and first I had the same idea as you. In fact I even put it away after 50 or so pages. It looked like default traveling plot (we are here, we are the chosen ones, we go there and this is what happened on way). When I finally got back to it and give it another chance I was surprised that there is more to the plot (much more) than it looks like.
Characters I would say are unique enough, they have similar ethic code to us (e.g. killing is bad, but no one is really that shocked that someone just got killed), but if you are expecting savage beasts then nope. Over all I would not say this as must read book, but surely it is great read and I enjoyed it.
Katie I respect your opinion but in my opinion the covers are perfect if they were a bit different I prob wont read it (also if you search uk wings of fire book covers they are very bad and worse then these)
Jasmine J I think all the characters are wonderful sunny or glory are my fav characters for books 1-5 did you also know that queen scarlet killed dune and I think blister killed Kasterel
Cray-Cray_Kitten this book is amazing and no one can say otherwise. ive been reading this series forever
Amelia DUDE. Only MudWings looks like crocodiles and they're SUPPOSED TO. It literally says in their description that they are similar to crocodiles and there's a character named Crocodile. RainWings do NOT look like crocodiles, neither do SeaWings (have you EVER seen a BLUE crocodile with GILLS and GLOWING SCALES???)

If I go along with your line of thinking, then NightWings must be crocodiles that has psychic powers and black scales. And IceWings must be albino crocodiles that has icicles glued to their backs. And SandWings must be crocodiles that lives in the desert and have scorpion tails. Don't be an idiot and at least look at the covers of all the books if you really can't do anything but judge this series by the covers!

I'm sorry for this vehement reply, but this is my favourite series you're talking about. Also, since you had said "dragons" in your question, I assumed you meant that all the dragon types look like crocodiles. And to be honest, the thought of anyone thinking that a RainWing look like a crocodile really infuriates me. Just search "RainWings Wings of Fire" up on Google or something and compare that to a winged crocodile!
Nick That’s just a bunch of crap! I have read the books over 15 times. I know the books are fiction, but that’s no need to criticize the books. The covers are good pictures. Why are you a “rude, rebellious character.” And are you “unique enough?”
Jay it is your opinion BittersweetDreams i'm not judging you.
ZK12340 read read and READ!!!
Maya These books are absolutely amazing and even if the cover doesn't appeal to you, I actually really like them. Also, to answer your question(s), yes the plot is much better than the covers. And the characters are awesome. Each dragon on the cover is the dragon that has the point of veiw in the book. I love all of them and if you try them out, you will love them just as much as I do.
|:|Weirdo|:| thats ur opinion tori but the cover looks just fine the way it is and it litterelly almost shows whats going on and whats the main character of the story (Clay the Mudwing). But the other books do the same thing but the cover just shows the main character at different places in the book.
Karen main idea of this book
*Amelia* One of the things I liked about the series was that the characters were dragons. She did a really good job with that. They aren't just humans painted as dragons.
I really loved the characters, they are all really well done and unique, some of the best characters I'd seen in a long time.
The plot might seem a little cliche at first, but it's still interesting, and it gets really really good as the story progresses.
Definetely worth reading
