Father Brown's housekeeper, Mr.s McCarthy, the flirty Bunty Windermere, elegant Lady Felicia and the bumbling Inspector Mallory were created by the screenwriters, not Chesterton.. Aside from the suspects, the only recurring characters in the GCK stories are Father Brown, and Flambeau. Father Brown in GKC's stories is more like a Detective Columbo, than the tall cheerful cleric in the series. He is considerably shorter and more reticent than Father Brown in the PBS series and Flambea in the GCK stories is an unusually large man, not the dapper, although criminal, character in the tv production, actor John Light. But I found the stories interesting. You will also find the writing style somewhat more intricate than the easy going vernacular in modern mysteries, but that can be a plus. There are notable quotes in the story line such as "Very few reputations are gained by unsullied virtue" How true especially in this day and age. (less)
