Daniel Gill I started reading the stories because of the TV series, and having just finished the first season of the show and the first volume of the stories, I can say I appreciate both greatly. As others have said, the TV series is inpired by the character and largely does not adapt the plots directly. There are ways in which I think the TV series properly refines the character of father Brown and ways in which I think Chesterton's portrayal remains superior. There's an explicit consideration of spiritual and religious matters in the stories that is subdued or even absent in the TV series, while at the same time in the TV series Father Brown is given space and time to actually empathize and counsel the victims and perpetrators he encounters to a degree i find lacking in the stories, which seem to me to omit this element due to length constraints more than anything.
Zrinka Dragun The TV series is based on this book and character, but it is not the same. I liked the stories better, but you have to read it to discover for yourself.
Michael Walker The books are light-years beyond the series, primarily because the TV media cannot bring to the screen the cleverness and delicious surprises found in the written word. Chesterton was a giant in intellectual circles, and a devout Christian (never explored in the TV series, which is why I quickly tuned it out).
Tim Donovan The series has a lighter atmosphere. Father Brown's housekeeper, Mr.s McCarthy, the flirty Bunty Windermere, elegant Lady Felicia and the bumbling Inspector Mallory were created by the screenwriters, not Chesterton.. Aside from the suspects, the only recurring characters in the GCK stories are Father Brown, and Flambeau. Father Brown in GKC's stories is more like a Detective Columbo, than the tall cheerful cleric in the series. He is considerably shorter and more reticent than Father Brown in the PBS series and Flambea in the GCK stories is an unusually large man, not the dapper, although criminal, character in the tv production, actor John Light. But I found the stories interesting. You will also find the writing style somewhat more intricate than the easy going vernacular in modern mysteries, but that can be a plus. There are notable quotes in the story line such as "Very few reputations are gained by unsullied virtue" How true especially in this day and age.
Diana Hariyanti If I'm not mistaken, Father Brown in TV series is Arthur Weasley, right??
