Is this an appropriate book for a ten year old girl?

I'm reading it now and so far the main character's eyes are pecked out by ravens in the first chapter. Then in Chap. 11 the ravens commit a "cold blooded murder". It might be not be appropriate if your child likes ravens or hasn't been desensitized to murder yet. A child with a strong imagination might be haunted by this.

Also worth noting: up to this point, Peter is physically, verbally and emotionally abused by his care-taker and there's some animal abuse as well; where some boys throw knives at a zebra.(less)
