What does the expression "yahn" mean? It is used frequently in this book, and I have yet to be able to understand it.

It's made up. I am reading this book now. To tell you the truth, I'm getting tired of reading the word since it is used all the time in this book and I'm not sure in what context.

It means ya hear? In other words, you hear.
Jean Perry
It's a southern colloquialism/contraction that takes the place of "hear" or "here" as used by non-southerners, usually as a question or command, as in "You be back by ten, y'ear?" I was surprised by the spelling Frank used. I would have spelled it "y'ear" or " ye'r".
