I have recently got my mum reading the Pushing The Limits series and she has brought it more to the forefront of my attention how... well I don't know how else to say it, how terrible all of your characters parents are. I was just wondering what inspires you to always write such horrible parental figures? Thank you.

(view spoiler)[Hi Izzy,
I don't intentionally set out to write bad parents. For me, part of growing up is realizing that your parents are human which means that they, like the rest of the world, make mistakes.
For instance, I don't view Echo's father as bad. I see that he loves Echo very much. His daughter has gone through something very traumatic, but he has no idea how to help her. If I was writing the story from his point of view, the reader would have been sympathetic to him, but because it is from Echo's point of view, the reader sees him as controlling.
Did he do the right thing by Echo? Maybe, maybe not. The truth is, he was doing the best he could and he knew it would never be enough.
Are there some parents in my stories that are not redeemable? Yes. Beth's mother comes to mind. She has a lot of emotional work to do before being a good mother to Beth, but unfortunately, there are some people in the world who are not good parents.
Thank you for the question!
