I love both of your books and am always recommending them to friends. Each one is so different. So here's my question. I'm interested in researching patent medicines and apothecaries in the 1800s. Can you recommend any resources you relied on while writing about Axie and Charlie's business? Thanks for the help, and I look forward to reading your next book. Lyn

Hi Lynn,
Well thanks so much for these kind words. Your own project sounds fascinating! Let's see--there's a list of the books I used for research in the acknowledgments section of My Notorious Life (the "Clinical Lectures" was the most important and you can find it at Project Gutenberg online. I have lost track of the links to other sites that helped me. But in my travels I have discovered the marvelous Dittrick Museum of Medical History in Cleveland. Check out their website and give them a call and I'm sure they'll steer you in the right direction. Good luck and all best, Kate

Hi Kate, We have a book group that has been going strong for 20+ years. I am so fortunate as I will be leading the book discussion on your book My Notorious Life next week. Do you see Axie as a hero? The risks she took...despite the looming consequences. Appreciate your input-I am guessing we are going to have a lively discussion next week :)

My unusual question is related to work I've done on my family history and the fact that, according to 1860 census data, my 2nd great grandfather was imprisoned in Montgomery County Pennsylvania in 1860, having been charged with Conspiracy to Procure Abortion as a result of the newly-minted PA criminal code earlier that same year. Based on your knowledge of that time period, what might you imagine him to have done?
