A Goodreads user asked Jonathan Stroud:

This might be a silly question and forgive me if you have answered it in the books but how does travel work in Lockwood's world? Especially ones that last for days? I mean accidents do acquire ghosts so are there whole trains or buses that are haunted or does the iron keep them away? Also there is stories of entire ships being ghosts (Like a whole ship appearing suddenly through the mist or stuff like that), do those+

Jonathan Stroud There are certainly plenty of historic accidents featuring forms of transport, and some of these will result in powerful ghosts. You're right, though, that in some cases the iron etc of buses or trains will negate the haunting. It depends whether the iron is still there... People are much more careful about tackling long-distance transportation in Lockwood's world - they don't like being out at night...
