What do you look to take away when researching material for a new story? Tone, potential conflicts, etc.

Mary Robinette Kowal You actually answered your own question. It's mostly conflicts and tone -- by tone, I mean the telling details that make the story feel real. I also look for larger context, but that's really just a way of making sure the conflicts are clear.
