Courtney asked this question about The City of Ember (Book of Ember, #1):
Without spoilers: could someone tell me exactly what this book is about? How old are Lina and Doon (they're labeled as children). I'm concerned, I do not want to read another book told from a child's POV. Thanks!

In the Builders' original plan, the mayor also possesses a box containing instructions for the citizens regarding the exodus route; however, over the course of time the box gets lost and forgotten. Over 241 years later, the city's infrastructure is failing: the power generator is causing more and more frequent blackouts, and the food rations are dwindling. The protagonists are two 12-year-olds, Lina Mayfleet and her friend Doon Harrow, who discover the box and take it upon themselves to piece the instructions back together.

This is a book intended for children. I personally felt that the book had a wonderful premise and setting but was ruined by poor character development. It's worth a read, but don't expect this book to wow you.(less)
