An underground city, the titular City of Ember, has been constructed and stocked with enough supplies to last two centuries. In the Builders' original plan, the mayor also possesses a box containing instructions for the citizens regarding the exodus route; however, over the course of time the box gets lost and forgotten. Over 241 years later, the city's infrastructure is failing: the power generator is causing more and more frequent blackouts, and the food rations are dwindling. The protagonists are two 12-year-olds, Lina Mayfleet and her friend Doon Harrow, who discover the box and take it upon themselves to piece the instructions back together.
This is a book intended for children. I personally felt that the book had a wonderful premise and setting but was ruined by poor character development. It's worth a read, but don't expect this book to wow you.

They are children, but the book is recommended. The people of Ember are running out of supplies (lights, food, etc.) and Lina & Dune try and uncover the secrets of Ember and how to get out of Ember.

I'm 12 yrs- In this book the "Builders" have left the city of Ember to the characters in the book. When supplies start to run out and people start to worry. Lina and Doon, 12 year old children, start finding clues to unlocking an escape out of Ember. (Ember is underground)
