because Patrick was such a bore

I am a big fan of Liane Moriarty but this isn't up to her usual standard. I actually thought it boring most of the time. I kept waiting for the interesting plot twist!!! Didn't happen.
Molly
I feel like I couldn't connect with Ellen & Patrick together. I found Saskia more interesting and almost more believable.

I thought the last third of the book was the most interesting, though everything gets tidied up in an almost too nice fashion. Just not that gripping of a story....

I think what I found interesting about the book was looking at the intricacies of hypnotizing people. I think we all relate to the stage show people put on and not the true use and helpfulness of using hypnosis to help people. I thought it was interesting. Hearing the "why" of the stalker's stalking was also a new perspective an I wondered how the author knew this view of things. I think if someone was looking for a traditional LOVE story....this was not it. It was more about accepting people, offering grace to others who may be hurting when you don't understand it or it interferes with your own plans. I thought it was interesting.

I love Liane Moriarty and usually devour her books but I am really struggling with this one. I too just can't seem to get into it and I've actually just put it aside now with the intention of getting back to it later. Glad to see I'm not the only one who is a fan but not getting into it this time.
Jennifer Murphy
I struggled through it and I usually like the author. It was meh
Lissa
I found Ellen totally unlikeable. Saskia, even as much of a lunatic as she is, was much more enjoyable to read.
Leah
It was far more interesting to listen to this book on Audibles. The narrator has such a lovely voice and drew me in.
Christina Cottagecats
maybe because you were not stalked....
Believe me, it's exactly like in the book and not funny

I too found it an easy ready, but that actually helped me get into it. I needed a simple story right now.

I agree with all these comments. I liked the triangle and the way Saskia burrowed into Ellen's life, but the Saskia-baking-in-Ellen's-kitchen scene was just too much.

For me, it helps to picture it all so that it's more like watching a movie than reading a book. Especially when they describe Ellen's house, that helps me to get into it. And I love all the little parts that are more Australian and aren't things people would say/do here in the United States - that also helps me get into these books.

I liked it a lot,a very strong character study. However I thought there was reverse sexism in the way Patricks stalking was handled,Everyone including Ellen, her friends and even Patricks family were intrigued rather than shocked by it.You can mark my words if the situation was reversed and Ellen was being stalked there would be a lot more outrage and that's wrong. Equality works both ways

I did get into it (course I was down with Covid at the time), but mostly because it gave all the perspectives of the main characters. Yeah, at times Ellen could be a bit too flighty & neurotic, Patrick too harsh & clueless, & Saskia too crazy & pathetic, but you see them from all sides, the good/bad/& ugly, like real people! Plus the hypnosis angle was fascinating.
Terri
I think that the slow pacing of the storyline is supposed to create tension, but it doesn't work. Nothing really ever seems to happen.
Gemma
I understand this. I'd read in a review that it had an amazing twist and I do love a great twist, not being a fan of the author previously, I thought I should give it a go. I even made sure I was alone and undisturbed for the last quarter of the book so as not to be disturbed to the twist of the end of the plot line. Only, there wasn't one. I agree it's a page-turner in the sense that people kept turning the page to see what happened. It was nothing. Ellen went on to have a great life with Patrick and family, Saskia moved on in her life. No great twist.

I couldnt either....oh well.
