Goodreads asked Rob Damon:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Rob Damon A good way of getting around writer's block is to take the characters from your current manuscript and, using a blank sheet of paper, write a scene that you have no intention of including in the story. I have used this technique and wrote a backstory for two characters, thinking I would never use it. That scene later became a key chapter in the manuscript.
