Jim asked Robert Masello:

Looking for the origin (first use in print) for: “the odds are good, but the goods are odd”. I wonder where you picked this up?

Robert Masello I wish I could tell you where I first heard it. I know I didn't read it. I used to write a lot of travel articles, and I think it was one of my fellow travel writers, a female, who first used it. Sorry to be of so little help. Its origins may now be lost in the mists of history.
