The answer to this is simple, and old advice. You've got to read lots and lots of different books and magazines. The more you read the better your writing becomes. I love what George RR Martin once said. 'Start with short stories and work up to novels. He said something like; 'you can't start learning to climb, by trying to conquer Everest.'
