I absolutely love the movie! And I'm just curious...is the book way better or just better??

Personally, I hated the book. For me, it's one of the very very rare instances where the movie is better. For one thing, the two are nothing alike. The characters have the same names, and that's about it. I couldn't even finish the book because I didn't recognize even a thread of connection to the movie that I love so much.

I liked the movie much better! In general I am finding with this author that I don't like how she plots out her books, very disjointed and without a proper plot line, and the movie had a great story!
Donna
I liked the movie waaaaay better.
Sarah
I think they can be judged separately. I have loved the movie for several years. The cast of amazingly different women, the music, the mystical winds with flower petals... The movie seems to make the whole witch thing much more avant guarde. However, there are plot holes, or things that don't make sense. It's almost portrayed as a comedy. The book is a little darker. The characters, richer.

I like both. However, I wish the movie followed the book. I really like the older versions of Antonia and Kylie, and Gillian gets a better plot.
Beth
They are indeed different. I loved the aunts in the film, and in the book they are not as important. Lots of other things in the film played to the strengths of the actors, and emphasized what would *have* to be visual.
But the book -- if you love lyrical writing, subtle magic on every page, and much more fully developed, complex characterization, you'll love it, too.
Both are fantastic, and for different reasons.

I honestly think the book is so much better. It goes into so much more detail than the movie, and things are different than the book - which, I had to put the movie out of my head whilst reading or I would get confused!
Raven
I absolutely love the movie, ever since I was a teenager. It's genuinely magical to me. Now, in my early 30s I have finally read the book and I genuinely hate it. It is one of those very rare cases when a movie is better than the book.
Julia
I definitely liked the book better than the movie!! You should always read the book first. That way you know what the author wants you to know, not what the writers and producers conger up in their heads to make money.
Laura
The book was abysmally bad. And nothing like the movie. Honestly, if I had read the book first (which I usually do but I didn't know it was a book) I never would have seen the movie.
Lynette Caulkins
Coming from a person who has long adored the movie, and just now read the book - I liked it just about as much as I like the movie. It's different, though! Think of it like you're reading an alternate-universe version of the Owens womens' experience.

I too absolutely hated this book. The movie is 100 time better and the story is more interesting than the books. Also Alice Hoffman's writing i not the best either.
Hvanderwielen
I found the book to be very poorly written. The writing style was very clunky.
Madu Gonçalves
I love the way the magic is built in the book, but it is very different from the movie, as has been stated. The movie is one of my all time favorites, so I prefer it, but the book is good as well, just not as happy. The sisters have a much more difficult relationship in there, which made me dislike one of them a little.
Kerrie Hoar
The move was better.
Jasmin
I loved the movie as well, but I found the book difficult to follow and a bit fantastic, and not in a good way. I agree with other responses, the book is slightly disjointed and hard to put together.
Charlotte
I loved the film too. But the book is almost nothing like it so for the first time ever I'm gonna just say it...I liked the film better.
Dylan
The book is always better, in my opinion. It exercises the brain in ways that a movie cannot. Also, for inexplicable reasons, the movie seldom follows the book as it was written.
Janelle
They really are two different stories. I read the book first, so the movie disappointed me. I think when they change the plot that much, they should change the title as well.
Erin Olson
I too absolutely love this movie. So far the book is quite simliar.
Veronica Marshall
The book and the movie are very different.

I thought the book was better, but the movie is very good. As someone else said, they can be judged separately. It would have been difficult to incorporate everything in the book into the movie. I thought they did a pretty good job and the casting was excellent. If you've seen the movie, read the book, see what you think.
Harry
I like the movie compare to the book itself because I think the movie is more fast paced.
Marie Z Johansen
That's a really subjective question! I too enjoyed the movie and I am always curious to see how well a movie follows it's inspiration book.
There are differences...but I honestly don't think that one is better than the other. If I HAD to choose which I enjoyed more...I might say the movie ....my suggestion? Read the book too!
