How do you come up with the countries and traditions in your books? Everything seem s to flow so smoothly, how do you keep everything straight?

Sometimes I cheat, and base the countries on real countries! Westfalin in the Twelve Dancing Princesses books is based on Germany, and Breton is England, etc. And sometimes I just have to make tons and tons of notes to make sure I don't screw up!
