Goodreads asked Juliet Waldron:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Juliet Waldron Alexander Hamilton has been with me since I was ten, when my mother bought me a novel written in 1902 from a used book store. The writer did a lot of pioneering research on the early life of her subject, but this was 1902 and he was a Founding Father, so she romanticized and fictionalized a great deal. Still, Hamilton was a companion all through my teens which was spent, like his, in the West Indies. It wasn't until later that I started reading biographies to learn more. This book was finished in the 90's and sat "in the drawer" until last year when I decided, finally, I could let it go.
