Yes read them in order. Two of the books in the middle of the series are somewhat connected. If you don't read them in order, it will hamper the storyline for those books.

Yes, the same characters with their own story line are from book to book. The books are much more enjoyable read in order.

I haven't read them in order. While that may be the ideal for someone starting new, I've found each of them immensely enjoyable without even looking to see where they come in order. It might be a "personality type" decision. Some readers are more linear than others. There's no right or wrong way. You can't lose, wherever you start.

I haven't read the books in order....and I've found it to be just fine. I actually listen to them and love the reader(s). Enjoy!!!

The Nature of the Beast could be read as a stand-along book. However, it will be a much, much richer experience if you have read the prior books first. And - if it turns out you like The Nature of the Beast, then in all likelihood you'll also like most if not all of the earlier books - so why not just start at the beginning?
Susan
I agree. I started the series on the recommendation of a client who suggested The Beautiful Mystery. I liked the story and Louise Penny"s writing so much that I bought all the books before that and read them in order. Then continued with the rest of the series. Each book is a stand alone, but she leaves something unresolved or open at the end of each book. You will want to read the next, and the next and the next!

I would read them in order. This one will make a lot more sense if you do. It's an excellent series- you won't regret starting at the beginning.
